How to Line a Crochet Purse - The EASY Way

I'm loving all those cute crochet purse patterns out there.  In fact I won one in a giveaway! So I've had to figure out how to line them.  Here is the easiest way I've found - no measuring required.  Love that.  You can make the crocheted purse pictured from my free patterns. 

Step 1: Lay your purse down on a folded piece of fabric with the fold lined up with the bottom of the fabric.  Trace around the purse with tailor's chalk or a pencil.  Cut out your fabric.

Step 2 (optional):  Sew a piece of velcro about 3/4 of an inch down at one end of the fabric on the right side.  Pin your velcro so it stays in the center (they are slippery fellas). Repeat on opposite side. (You could also do a zipper or magnetic closure here too.)

Step 3:  With right sides together and velcro closed, sew up both sides of the lining.



Step 4: Press side seams open. Fold top opening about a half inch down towards the wrong side and press.

Step 5:  Insert lining in the purse.  Pin top of lining all the way around and hand stitch in place (with matching thread, unlike example : )

Step 6: Admire your beautiful creation! Voila!  You're done.

Crochet Mandala Kids Purse Pattern and Tutorial

This little purse is so easy and cute and will delight any kid!  Perfect for some crayons and a little pad of paper or for any other kid essentials!  The mandalas here are slightly different in pattern but very much inspired by Alice at Crochet with Raymond.

Stitch guide:

2dc cluster (2-cl): yarn over, insert hook into stitch, yarn over, pull through stitch, yarn over, pull through two loops, yarn over, insert hook into same stitch, yarn over, pull through stitch, yarn over, pull through two loops, yarn over, pull through remaining 3 loops on hook.

Treble Crochet (tr): yarn over twice, insert hook into stitch, yarn over pull through stitch, yarn over, pull through 2 loops, yarn over, pull through two loops, yarn over pull through remaining two loops.

Yarn: I used Stitch Nation Full O’ Sheep for colors A (thyme), B (passion fruit), and C (lavender) and Cascad Eco + in Charcoal for color C.

Gauge: Not critical, but for a 5 inch square, each 2-cl should be about a ½ inch wide at its widest point.

Granny Squares (Make 2):

Rd 1: With color A, ch 2 loosely, *2-cl in second ch from hook, ch1*, repeat * to * 5 times. (6 2-cl). Join and fasten.

Rd 2: With color B, join in any ch 1 sp from round 1, ch 1 loosely, 2-cl in same sp, ch 1, 2-cl in same sp, ch 1, *2-cl in next ch 1 sp, ch 1, 2-cl in same sp*, repeat from * to * around. (12 2-cl). Join and fasten.

Rd 3: With color C, join in any ch 1 sp from round 2, ch 1 loosely, 2-cl in same sp two times, ch 1, *2-cl in next ch 1 space twice, ch 1*, repeat from * to * around. (24 2-cl). Join and fasten.

Rd 4: With color D, join in any ch 1 sp from round 3, ch 1 loosely, 2-cl in same sp two times, ch 1, [*2-cl in next ch 1 space twice, ch 1*, repeat from * to * once, 2-cl, tr, ch 2, tr, 2-cl in next sp, ch 1], repeat from [ to ] around.

Fasten and weave in your ends.

Finishing and Strap:

With granny squares right sides together, start at one corner and sc through both squares around three sides, working 3 scs in each of the two corners at the bottom of the purse.  Do not fasten.

Work a row of sc around the opening.  Join to first sc.  Do not fasten.

Ch 90, join to other side of purse with sl st making sure not to twist the ch. Ch1, turn, hdc back across strap to the other side. Join with sl st. Fasten and weave in all your ends. Turn right side out.

For lining:

Step 1: Fold a scrap piece of fabric in half and place the granny square on top.  Trace around it with tailor’s chalk or a pencil leaving about a half inch for seam allowance on the sides and the top.  Cut lining out. 

Step 2:  At the opening, pin and sew Velcro on right sides about ¾ of an inch down from the top of the opening. 

Step 3: With Velcro closed and right sides together sew sides leaving about ½ inch seam allowance.  Press seams open.

Step 4:  Fold top opening down about ½ inch towards wrong side and press.

Finishing:  Put the lining in the purse, pin in place and hand sew around opening.
