Easy Peasy! That's what I love about this pattern and it turns out quite cute!
If you find a problem with this pattern, please comment so I can fix it!Yarn: About 1.5 skeins of Caron Simply Soft in Country Blue (approximately 500 yards) with Cascade Superwash in Violet (about 50 yards or so) for the trim (Just what I had on hand).
Hook: Bottom Skirt Use F Hook, then Switch to D Hook
Gauge: for skirt 14 tr and 5 rows is a 4 inch square. For bodice 20 dc and 10 rows is a 4 inch square. Finished project is about size 4T
Notes: Start from bottom and work your way up to the top. Shaping of skirt is done only by changing stitch and hook. No decreases!!! Yeah! (Until you get to the top). Turn your work after every round. (I find this keeps the joins straighter, otherwise they start going diagonally on me if I don't turn my work, may just be me, so if you can keep your joins straight by all means, don't turn!).
Skirt.
Foundation Row: Ch. 120 sl st to join in a circle without twisting.
Row 1. Ch. 3. (counts as first stitch) Tr. around. (120 Tr.) sl st to join. ch. 3 Turn.
Repeat Round 1 for 7 inches. At the end of the last Tr. round, ch 2 and Turn.
Dc around (120 dc) ch 2 Turn.
Repeat Dc around for 4 inches. At the end of the last Dc round, ch 1 and turn.
hdc around for 2 inches. (120 hdc) At the end of the last hdc round, ch 1 and turn.
Switch to D hook.
sc around for 1 inch (120 sc). You are done with the skirt! Do NOT FASTEN Now wasn't that easy! And look how it is just shaped perfectly!
Trim
Switch to CC.
Round 1: with WS facing, 2 dc in blo around (240 dc) (make sure MC yarn is in the inside of the skirt before you join). Join with sl st. ch 2 turn.
Round 2: 2 dc in each stitch (480 dc). Fasten off.
Top
With MC and WS facing, sc around in flo. (120 sc). sl st. to join, ch. 2 and turn.
Dc around, do not join from here on out. (120 dc) ch 2 turn.
Dc around again, ch. 2 turn (120dc).
Now for the sleeve openings:
Dc 30, ch. 30, dc 60, ch 30, dc 30 (180 stitches) ch 2, turn.
dc around (180 dc) ch 2 turn.
Now for a decrease row:
Dc 2, dc 2tog, *(dc3, dc 2tog)* repeat from * to * around. (145 dc) ch 2 turn
dc around (145 dc) ch 2 turn
dc around (145 dc) ch 2 turn
Another decrease row:
Dc 2, dc 2tog, *(dc3, dc 2tog)* repeat from * to * around. (116 dc) ch 2 turn
dc around (116 dc) ch 2 turn
dc around (116 dc) ch 2 turn
Another decrease row (with more decreases):
Dc, dc 2tog, *(dc2, dc 2tog)* repeat from * to * around. (88 dc) ch 2 turn
dc around (88dc) ch 2 turn
dc around (88dc) and you are DONE!!! Well almost.
Note: I think my dress would fit my daughter better if I did one more decrease round and then an extra just regular dc round.
Finishing:
Fasten and weave all ends.
For bottom and neck trim. With cc, sl stitch in. ch 3, sk st. sc, repeat around.
For buttons. with mc. On right side, sl in bottom of opening, sc up to neck, ch1 turn, sc down again. fasten and weave. On other side, sl in bottom of opening, sc up to neck, ch 1, 2 sc, 2 ch, sk 2 repeat down to bottom of opening, fasten and weave.
Attach buttons.
Now you are really done!!

ReplyDeleteI just finished the skirt and didn't know if I needed to change hooks again. Do I change back to the F hook after I finish the skirt or do I do the rest of the pattern in the D hook?
ReplyDeleteNo. I just kept with the D hook for the rest of the way to keep the bodice a bit more fitted. Hope it turns out great!!!

DeleteAt some point I plan on doing a more professional job with this pattern including different sizes! For a smaller size I would start with less stitches in the first round Then try skipping the triple rounds and see how that works. Good luck!

ReplyDeleteblo means "back loop only" and flo means "front loop only" i.e., instead of inserting your hook through both loops youd insert through one or other loop.

ReplyDeleteI mean say your crocheting clockwise around. On the next round you will crochet counterclockwise. You just slip stitch to close the round then turn, skip over the slip stitch you just made and crochet in the other direction. Hope that helps!!

I love this pattern and was wondering if I were to make it with cotton yarn, would I need to make it bigger to allow for shrinking? I'm not sure how I would go about that...any help would be appreciated!
ReplyDeleteHi Holly, so glad you found crochet. If you'd like to make the dress a bit bigger you could use a larger hook throughout. Not sure how your yarn will shrink. You could do a swatch and measure it before and after you wash it. Hope that helps. Good luck!

Hi Hanna, Yes, right in the middle of the back. That allows for the button opening to be centered in the back.

ReplyDeleteHmmm, I'll have to get back to you after i've had a chance to measure it. My girl wears a size 6 now and she is still wearing the dress although it is more of a shirt/top now rather than a dress.

ReplyDeleteI would try using thin yarn and smaller hook. I'd suggest maybe sport weight or fingering yarn. That should work!

ReplyDeleteblo means Back Loop Only. It means that you work your stitches in the back loop of the indicated stitch, not both loops.

I have 3 nieces and a daughter to make outfits for in time for Christmas this year and was not looking forward to having to make a bunch of pieces and remember which one goes with which size.

ReplyDeleteYou just continue the dcs in the next st leaving a loop of chains. Each loop of chains will be an armhole. Does that help at all?

DeleteIt connects to the next stitch. After you chain 30, pretend that you never chained at all and just keep going in the next stitch. You'll have a loop of chains. you will work your next row in that loop of chains and continue up to make the yoke. Just keep going, it will all work out. . .

ReplyDeleteI made this in 2 sizes, mostly using smaller/larger hooks and addind a fer extra rows herevand there. One was a 4-5 toddler and other a 7-8. Both came out nice and the girls love them. For the 4-5 i used hook called for but added an inch to each step. Top was as is. I did enlarge armholes by adding extra stitches to fit. In 3rd set only decrease the added stitches. (If you added 5 to each sleeve

For Top: After changing back to MC row I do the next round and joined. Then the next round DC and it says do not join from here on... Not understanding what to do... Do I just chain 2 and turn? That will make an opening for the buttons?
